I first met Carol when I attended a support group for young parents that she was helping facilitate. I was new to town, had no friends who had children, and felt insecure about my abilities as a new mother. I continued attending the group and other playgroup classes where Carol lead the parent discussions. After Carol introduced herself and explained what the plan was for the adults, she did the same thing for the toddlers. I had never seen someone speak to toddlers with such respect, I was blown away! When a toddler would cry or get upset, Carol would remain calm and reflect back to the child what had happened. We parents would quickly regulate ourselves, each taking a bit of Carol’s composure as not to escalate the big emotions in the room. This was the first time I really understood what it means to “hold space” for our children. She offered gentle guidance to help us each explore solutions that would work best for our unique families. Seeing Carol interact with babies is truly a unique experience and one that has shaped me tremendously as a mother. I took the tools that I learned there and used them at home with great success. Carol’s encouragement gave me the confidence to pursue my passion for working with families wholeheartedly. Now, 3 years later, I facilitate that same group for young parents and work alongside Carol taking the tools I’ve learned from her and applying them to my own work with families. Knowing Carol has made me a better mother and facilitator and I am so grateful for the privilege to know and work alongside her. Knowing her has truly changed my life, and the lives of my children for the better.
